How many times have you heard, “I’m awkward in pictures” or “I’m not very photogenic". People shouldn’t ever feel this way! I’m going to tell you how you will never have to feel like this again! …Especially at a session with me. I use prompting instead of posing…and we have FUN! The best types of photos are the ones with real emotion and real smiles, those are the portraits you want to hang on the walls. Those are the perfect portraits to show how close your family is and how awesome ya’ll are together.
Photography just got stuck with boring posing. After years and years of needing to stay very still to have enough light enter the lens, stiff posing just stuck around. People are placed next to each other in a stiff way and told to just hold that pose and smile. No wonder people are thinking they are awkward in photos…. that is a super awkward situation! But thankfully, photography has evolved! We need to show how much fun we can have in these photos right?!
Usually dad is the one that has to put up with the photo shoot and mom sets it all up for the family, am I right moms? After my sessions, I have had dads come up to me and tell me that it was actually really fun! They love the fact I could capture portraits with a real smile of them. Capturing real emotion and happiness in portraits is harder than you might think it is, it’s almost like a type of art that you need to learn to be the expert in. Most families I am meeting for the first time, and I take their portraits like I’ve known them for years. This is where prompting comes in.
Prompting is when I help you get into a moment that is photogenic and natural. Prompted photos feel candid and authentic. Prompts are a great way to take your mind off the fact that your photo is being taken, and to think about the emotion it brings instead. I have such a passion for getting even the most uncomfortable people to have a great time getting their portraits done.
Before any session, I sit down and personally come up with an entire plan for your shoot with all of the prompts that will be used, customized to your family depending on how old your children are, if they are a boy or girl ect. This does take up a bit of extra time, but it is so worth it when I can make sure to get every shot perfect. Prompting is when I ask you do things that you would hardly ever be asked to do for a picture, and then I capture your beautiful reaction.
For example, I might ask a couple during an engagement session these types of things:
“Come walk slowly towards me, and bump hips to try to knock each other off balance while you come over here!”
“Stand facing each other and warm each others hands as if it were freezing outside!”
“Nuzzle into her and whisper in her ear your favorite type of cereal”
“Draw a picture on her cheek with your nose, then she’ll try to guess what the picture was!”
“Touch nose to nose, think about your fist kiss, and slowly breath each other in.”
During a family session these are some prompts that get some good emotion and smiles:
“How about showing mom some love and give her the biggest hug ever”
“What’s the funniest thing dad does?
“Okay say this three time fast, Sammy smells socks at the sock hop!”
“Mom, can you tell these kids what you love best about them?”
“Everyone hold hands and spin in a circle until I say stop”
“Dad hold your baby on your hip. Mom and dad both hop over to each other and bump hips with baby in the middle.”
“Everyone hold hands and walk to me as if your were stuck on a ship swaying back and forth!”
“Kids come over here behind dad, on the count of three your going to run up behind him and give him a giant hug!”
There are endless amounts of possibilities prompting for siblings, individual portraits, couples, and families to make people feel comfortable in front of the camera. It’s all about creating customized personal art you can cherish forever. When you look back at a family photo, you should always be able to say, “look at how happy those pictures are!!”
The next time you taking pictures of your family or fiends, throw a silly prompt out there and watch the magic happen!
